On May 31, 2024, the Government of Canada announced renewed funding for the Brain Canada Foundation, with a commitment of $80 million over four years. This initiative aims to support innovative research and collaborations in brain health to better understand and treat neurological diseases, ultimately improving the quality of life for Canadians.

May 31, 2024 - The Government of Canada has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing brain health research with a significant investment in Brain Canada. At an event held at the Douglas Research Centre, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced on behalf of the Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, the renewal of funding for Brain Canada Foundation. This renewed commitment includes an investment of $80 million over the next four years.

This announcement highlights the Government of Canada's dedication to addressing the high rates of brain and neurological diseases, disorders, illnesses, and other health conditions affecting thousands of Canadians. Statistics reveal that one in three people in Canada will face a neurological disease or neuropsychiatric disorder in their lifetime. As the population ages, the incidence of brain diseases and disorders, along with the cost of caring for affected individuals, is expected to rise, placing additional strain on an already burdened healthcare system.

The event saw the participation of several notable figures, including Viviane Poupon, President and CEO of Brain Canada, Mario Chartrand, Chair of the Board, Dr. Gustavo Turecki, Scientific Director, and Members of Parliament Anna Gainey and Patricia Lattanzio. Together, they celebrated this crucial investment in brain health research.

In his remarks, Minister Guilbeault emphasized the importance of this funding: “Our government’s continued investment in Brain Canada underscores our commitment to advancing brain health research. By supporting innovative studies and collaboration, we are taking important steps towards understanding and treating neurological conditions, ultimately improving quality of life for all people in Canada.”

Brain Canada Foundation plays a pivotal role in funding and supporting innovative brain research across the country. This renewed funding will enable the continuation and expansion of research programs aimed at improving the understanding, prevention, and treatment of brain-related conditions. The foundation’s work is essential in fostering collaborations between researchers, clinicians, and patients, ultimately leading to breakthroughs that can significantly impact the lives of Canadians.

This announcement is a testament to the Government of Canada's dedication to advancing healthcare and supporting the scientific community. The renewed funding will ensure that Brain Canada can continue to drive innovation and excellence in brain research, paving the way for new discoveries and improved treatments for neurological conditions.
