Principles
SENSUM's activities are guided by seven general principles:
1. Promoting Excellence in Research and Teaching
SENSUM supports research grounded in values such as methodological rigor, evidence-based practices, and scientific validity. It also prioritizes innovative teaching methods with significant pedagogical outcomes and renown at local, national, and international levels.
2. Developing Intersectoral Collaboration in Research and Education
The intersectoral approach championed by SENSUM goes beyond the simple addition or hierarchy of knowledge in neuroscience and mental health, promoting joint research and education. This requires complementary understanding of phenomena and knowledge transmission.
3. Fostering Collaborations and Partnerships
By connecting research leaders in neuroscience and mental health, SENSUM encourages the sharing of knowledge, resources, and methodological and technological tools. These collaborations and partnerships provide a comprehensive understanding of complex systems in neuroscience and mental health.
4. Optimizing Social Impact and Visibility
Research and training activities in neuroscience and mental health under SENSUM must create lasting positive outcomes for individuals (quality of life, health, autonomy) and society (social bonds, equality, policy changes, healthcare accessibility, and economic impacts). Through a strategic communication and visibility approach, SENSUM's work impacts targeted stakeholders and the general public at local, Canadian, and international levels.
5. Encouraging Multidirectional Dialogue
SENSUM values the involvement of stakeholders from civil society, academia, clinical practice, patients, and industry in research projects. This joint work improves the understanding of the scientific, social, and practical aspects of research and allows for maximum societal impact through a co-creation process.
6. Reducing Inequalities and Bias while Promoting Inclusion
SENSUM-supported research is interdisciplinary, conducted at various stages (from fundamental research to societal impact studies) and includes various participants (researchers, institutions, patient partners). Through a reflective approach, SENSUM promotes rigorous, inclusive, and equitable research, free from bias.
7. Supporting Entrepreneurial Mechanisms
When entrepreneurial opportunities arise, SENSUM supports them by sharing expertise, technological resources, and human capital to bring large-scale projects to fruition. To ensure transparency and prevent conflicts of interest or collusion, SENSUM promotes socially responsible and ethical behavior, with a commitment to preserving the environment among all its partners.
