Dr. Dang Khoa Nguyen is the Head of the Neurology Department at CHUM and a full professor at the Université de Montréal, specializing in epilepsy research and treatment.
He is a principal investigator in neuroscience at the CHUM Research Centre and holds the Canada Research Chair in Epilepsy and Functional Brain Anatomy.
One of Dr. Nguyen's major contributions has been the study of the role of the insula in both normal conditions (structural and functional connectivity, roles and functions in social cognition, empathy, pain, interception, etc.) and pathological conditions (epilepsy, pain, addiction, etc.). His team has gained international recognition for identifying the insula as a potential seizure focus that can be treated through microsurgical resection.
Over the past two decades, his team has also worked on:
a) developing and validating a range of new techniques such as near-infrared spectroscopy, magnetoencephalography, and tractography;
b) seizure detection and prediction using various sensors/connected devices (implanted or external) and artificial intelligence techniques; and
c) the automated analysis of electroencephalograms (EEG).
Throughout his career, Dr. Nguyen has published over 210 peer-reviewed articles and more than 350 abstracts, reflecting his significant contributions to neuroscience and epilepsy research.
