Michel Cayouette is a Full Professor in the Department of Medicine at Université de Montréal and Director of the Cellular Neurobiology Research Unit at the Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM).

His laboratory’s research aims to elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms that generate neuronal diversity during the development of the nervous system. Focusing on the retina, the team seeks to understand how neural stem cells proliferate and differentiate to produce the multiple retinal cell types. To achieve this, they combine genetic approaches in mice with real-time cellular imaging. Ultimately, this research paves the way for neural stem cell–based therapies to repair the retina and, more broadly, to rebuild regions of the central nervous system.
