Shady Rahayel

Assistant professor

Shady Rahayel is an Assistant Professor and Researcher at the Department of Medicine of the University of Montreal and at the Center for Advanced Studies in Sleep Medicine.

His research focuses on brain imaging and computational neuroscience in the context of sleep disorders associated with the development of atypical dementias and degenerative movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease.

Recently, he was awarded the Outstanding Early Investigator Award by the Sleep Research Society for his notable scientific contribution titled "Brain atrophy in prodromal synucleinopathy is shaped by structural connectivity and gene expression." This recognition highlights his exceptional commitment as an early-career researcher in the field of sleep.

His current research projects aim to explore the underlying mechanisms of brain alterations observed in individuals with Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's disease or early signs of these conditions. With a grant of $200,000 from the Alzheimer Society of Canada and $75,000 from Parkinson Canada, he continues his investigations in this area.

Shady Rahayel's dedication to research in the fields of sleep and neurodegeneration is evidenced by his efforts to better understand the biological mechanisms underlying these disorders, thus paving the way for new therapeutic and preventive approaches.
