Alexandre Prat

Full Professor, Director
Department of Neuroscience
University of Montreal

Alexandre Prat is a full professor and director of the University of Montreal's Department of Neuroscience. He is a neurologist at the Montreal University Hospital Centre. He is chairholder for the Research on Multiple Sclerosis in Canada and chairholder for the Power corporation of Canada in Neuroscience for the Montreal University.

From 2015 to 2018, he was the deputy director of development for the CRCHUM, an institution that has over 120 researchers and 2 000 employees.

His interests of research of the Prat Laboratory include immunological roles of BHE, the migration mechanisms of monocytes and lymphocytes throughout BHE and the physiological regulation of the BHE functions by the glial cells. The hypothesis of research work is that the understanding of the mechanisms that the BHE control the passage of cells and molecules in brain should lead to a better understanding of illnesses such as multiple sclerosis and brain tumors and the discovery of new administration methods of medicine and chemotherapy for the brain. The research activities of Dr. Prat puts an importance to the biology of lymphocytes TH1 and TH17 and the importance of lymphocyte B in multiple sclerosis. The laboratory uses specialized techniques such as scRNA-Seq, flow cytometry with 23 colours for the analysis of the central nervous system and for blood analysis, multiphoton dynamic imaging, confocal microscopy of human brain samples of patients that have multiple sclerosis, animal models of multiple sclerosis (EAE) and also primary culture of glial and endothelial cells of the brain.
